Maintain peak mental performance – Drink plenty of water. We all know that the benefits of drinking water are numerous yet many of us fail to drink the recommended eight glasses of water a day.
According to recent research published on MSN News, not drinking enough water can do some crazy things to our mental state, such as leading to extreme confusion and delirious thoughts.
The study involved analysing 25 young women for a period of three days. During this time the women were made to become dehydrated through three intense treadmill sessions lasting 40 minutes as well as one separate treadmill work out after they had taken a diuretic.
In the final session on the treadmill the women were allowed to take sips of water throughout the exercise regime so that they were properly hydrated. During and after each workout the women took various cognitive tests.
The study found that during the workouts when the women were dehydrated they were more prone to fatigue, had an inability to concentrate, had increased mood disturbances, found tasks to be difficult and were susceptible to getting headaches, both during the exercise and whilst resting.
MSN News also reported that the women found it difficult to distinguish between when they were adequately hydrated and dehydrated.
The study proved interesting, not so much for the fact that it confirmed that not drinking enough water, particularly when performing physical exercise, can mean that our concentration, mood, perception of tasks and how disposed to headaches we are is affected, but also because we are often unaware that we are dehydrated.
Whilst factors such as humidity, physical activity, altitude and the amount of water there is in the food we consume can affect how hydrated we remain throughout the day, to maintain peak mental performance, it is recommended that we take regular sips of water throughout the day.
