If so, you may find the following five tips on how to control those sweet, sugary cravings useful.

Chew gum

Similar to when people stop smoking, denying your body of sugar may cause some pretty intense cravings. Chewing gum can help you get through the cravings. According to nutrition advisor Dave Grotto, “Research has shown that chewing gum can reduce food cravings.”

Munch on fruit

Always have some pieces of fruit nearby when you are going ‘cold turkey’ with sugar. The sweetness of sugar will help to combat the craving, as well as providing you with a healthy and nutritious snack. Dried fruit is also a good alternative to snacking on chocolate and other sugary snacks. Addiction specialist, Judy Chambers advises that dieters should stock up on foods such as dried fruits and nuts, stating, “Have them handy so you reach for them instead of reaching for the old sugary something.”

Combine your snacks

If stopping sugary snacks from your diet entirely sounds almost impossible try combining sweet foods with other healthier foods. Registered dietician, Kerry Neville, suggests that by combining foods you will satisfy cravings but also reap the nutritional benefits of healthy foods.

“I like combining the craving food with a healthful one. I love chocolate, for example, so sometimes I’ll dip a banana in chocolate sauce and that gives me what I’m craving, or I mix some almonds with chocolate chips,” says the dietician.

Get active

The best way to conquer sugar cravings is, according to Kerry Neville, to get up and literally walk away from them. “Take a walk around the block, or do something to change the scenery, to take your mind off the food you’re craving,” suggests Neville.

Eat at regular intervals

If you are prone to snacking on healthy, sugary food, it is not advisable to wait too long between meals. According to Susan Moores, a registered dietician and nutrition consultant, eating every three to five hours can help keep blood sugar stable help you to “avoid irrational eating”.
