What is ketosis and how does it happen?
The term ‘ketosis’ became popular with the rise of the Atkins Diet. The popular diet, endorsed by many celebrities, advises people to cut out carbohydrates from their food intake and consume large amounts of protein and fat.
When this type of eating pattern occurs the body goes into a state of ketosis. Ketosis is simply the process that occurs when the body stops sourcing is energy from carbohydrates and instead uses fat for energy.
By burning fat for energy, dieters are able to lose large amounts of weight through the reduction in fat stores. Despite being very effective at reducing excess body fat, many health experts warn against following this type of high protein, high fat diet as it can place strain onto the kidneys and large amounts of fat can lead to high cholesterol and heart issues.
If you are following an Atkins-style diet and you would like to know if your body is in ketosis, you can buy a ketone testing kit from most chemists. The kits analyse a urine sample and tell the user if they’re body is in ketosis.
Carbohydrate provides the regular energy supply for the body, but if carbohydrate is greatly reduced the body needs to look elsewhere for its energy needs (Carbohydrates are found in many staple foods such as bread, pasta, potatoes and cereals, as well as in fruit).
Akins-style diets recommend limiting the intake of these foods or even eliminating them completely. While many health experts have their concerns over these types of diet, there is little evidence that following these diets for short periods actually leads to any long-term damage.
