Magnet therapy (or magnetic therapy) is a commonly used therapy involving the use of magnets to treat a wide range of health conditions. It is a totally natural therapy and is frequently used to relive pain, improve sleeping patterns and boost energy levels.
The first recordings of magnets being used for treating health issues date back thousands of years, yet today magnet therapy still struggles to be officially recognised by many medical councils.
But does magnetic therapy work? Well, the theory behind magnetic therapy is that when a magnet is placed around a specific joint or body part, more blood is attracted to that area, leading to an increase in oxygen and nutrients.
The combination of increased oxygen and nutrients leads to a faster healing process. Magnetic therapy is a non-invasive therapy and one which the World Health Organisation states has ‘no health hazards’.
Hundreds of thousands of testimonials from people all around the world are fantastic evidence to support the healing effects of magnetic therapy, but exactly how does magnetic therapy work on the human body?
The majority of natural chemicals in the body are what is known as electro-chemical ions. This means that they have either positive or negative charges and also produce electro-magnetic fields. During normal function the nerves of the body maintain a careful balance between their positive and negative ions, keeping a slightly negative charge. However when pain or discomfort occurs, there is a shift in the balance of the ions, leading to a more positive charge.
Research over many years has identified that all of the body’s functions are controlled by electro-magnetic fields, produced directly by ions. The constriction and dilation of blood vessels can be controlled by negative magnetic fields.
Capillaries constrict around areas with injury, decreasing swelling and pain. As the swelling is reduced the capillaries then dilate to increase blood flow, and therefore increase oxygen and nutrient delivery to the affected area. With the influence of negative magnetic fields, the speed of these processes is increased, resulting in faster recovery rates.
The removal of positive ions from the affected area leads to a significant decrease in pain and discomfort and also to a faster recovery. The above should now confirm the answer to ‘Does magnetic therapy work?’
