Three different types of magnets typically used in magnetic therapy

With the prolific rise of magnetic therapy during the last 20 years or so, magnetic device manufacturers have been busy developing new and innovative magnetic instruments designed to target practically every area of the body.

As a consequence of the increased demand for magnetic treatments, there are various types, strengths and sizes of magnets available, some of which can be administered by individual themselves and others which must be applied and controlled by a health professional.

If you are unsure about what kind of magnets are typically used in magnetic therapy, take a look at three different types of magnets that are commonly used in magnetic therapy.

Neodymium Magnets

What have been referred to as being the ‘king’ of magnets, neodymium magnets are extremely powerful and comprise of three metals – neodymium, which is a rare earth metal, ferrite and boron.

Neodymium magnets are commonly used to treat soft tissue damage on areas such as the knees, shoulders, hip and back. The best quality neodymium magnets have a surface gauss of 1,200 and a core rating gauss of 12,300 and are known to hold their magnetic fields for up to 15 years.

Flexible magnets

Whilst they are much lower in their magnetic strength, having an approximate 2,750 gauss rating, because flexible magnets are, as their name suggests, extremely flexible, they are typically used on the toes, finger, wrists and ankles, areas where less penetration but greater flexibility is required.

Magnetic therapy for Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a medical disorder that is categorised by widespread chronic pain and other conditions, such as sleep disturbance, fatigue, difficulty swallowing, bladder and bowel abnormalities, joint stiffness, as well anxiety and depression.

What causes fibromyalgia?

Several theories of the causes of fibromyalgia have been reported although the exact cause is unknown. One theory is that the condition is caused by “central sensitization”, whereby patients of fibromyalgia have a lower threshold of pain than most because of increased sensitivity in the brain to pain signals. Other research has suggested that fibromyalgia may be caused by genetic predispositions, while another theory is that the disorder can be caused by acute stress. Although none of these theories are by any means conclusive.

What are the treatments for fibromyalgia?

As with most unexplained medical disorders, and due to the fact that fibromyalgia can consist of many different symptoms, there is no widespread accepted treatment or ‘cure’ for the disease, and treatment typically entails symptom management, medication, exercise and complementary medicine.

Magnetic bracelet therapy – what ailments can be helped?

We’ve all heard that magnetic bracelets can help overcome pain and act as an effective alternative treatment to various health conditions, but knowing what types of pain magnetic bracelets can help target and eliminate is a little more ambiguous.

magnetic bracelet therapy

To help you get a clearer picture about Magnetic bracelet therapy and what type of pain and ailments magnetic bracelets can treat, below is an overview on what the top three health conditions magnetic bracelets are widely used for to help reduce the pain.

Magnetic bracelets for arthritis

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 46 million U.S. citizens suffer from pains in their joints caused by arthritis, and that almost 90% of sufferers seek pain through alternative treatments.

As magnets produce energy fields and polarity, bracelets designed with static magnetic properties, can help alleviate joint pain, and therefore magnetic bracelet therapy continue to be a popular alternative treatment for the pain caused by arthritis.

Magnetic bracelets for back pain

Back pain is extremely common, in fact as many as one in five people will suffer from back pain at some point in their lives. Given the rifeness of back conditions, there are a huge number of people seeking pain relief from back conditions through alternative treatments.

As magnetic bracelets increase the blood circulation and expand capillaries, a greater volume of blood can reach the cells of the body. Improved blood circulation is believed to help remove painful waste products from muscles and increase the oxygenation to painful cells, which makes Magnetic bracelet therapy a favourable option form many in alleviating the pain of some forms of oxygen deprivation back pain.

Magnetic therapy for knee pain

Knee pain can be a serious and debilitating condition, which affects millions of people each year. For centuries magnetic therapy has been used to treat conditions that affect the joint and muscles and there is an increasing amount of literature and reports analysing the effects magnetic therapy can have on various conditions, such as injuries to the knee.

Whilst may people suffering from pains in the joints and injuries to the tendons and muscles claim that magnetic forms of therapy has helped to treat the pain and speed recovery, others remain more unconvinced and the medical profession, by and large, remains sceptical that magnetic therapy is a viable form of treatment for debilitating conditions and injuries.

Whilst the world of medicine, at large, remains dubious, the world of alternative medicine generally holds a hypothesis that in aligning the molecules of blood by acting directly on the iron in blood to improve circulation, magnetic therapy for knee pain can indeed prove beneficial to those suffering.

Helping ‘silence the sceptics’ is a study that was carried out by researchers at the Bayler College of Medicine in Houston when 50 patients suffering from post-polio pain.

The team of scientists conducted two tests; one involved using real magnets and one using sham magnets. According to a report published on Arthritis.About.com, the 29 patients who had undergone treatment with an active magnet had reported a greater reduction in pain that the 21 patients who had received treatment with a fake magnet, thus proving that magnetic therapy lies deeper than merely being a ‘placebo effect’.

The authors of the Bayler College research concluded that the “Application of a device delivering static magnetic fields of 300 to 500 G (Gauss) over a pain trigger point results in significant and prompt relief of pain in post-polio patients”.
